According to multiple news outlets, nearly 40,000 Macs worldwide have been infected with mysterious malware.

If you still believe your Apple / Mac systems are impervious to viruses and hackers, there’s just no evidence to support your belief, sadly.
Here’s the basics for how to keep your Mac safe from hackers:
- Keep it patched & updated. If you’re running a version of MacOS that’s no longer supported, update the OS to the latest version, or get a Mac that will support a supported version of the MacOS. This goes for all operating systems, by the way.
- Use a reputable Endpoint Detection & Response program – antivirus software is no longer sufficient. To keep up with hackers that use your operating systems’ tools against you and can destroy your systems without a traditional “virus” being installed on your computer, you need to run the new breed of defense software on your computer. It’s commonly referred to as “Endpoint Detection & Response” or several other terms.
- Use (and update) a multi-layer firewall at home & at work that blocks content & protects your DNS. This feels like it’s complicated, but many business-grade firewall manufacturers make “home-sized” models that are worth every penny, and they’re not hard to manage.
- Backup backup backup. In the cloud, locally, early and often.
- Invest in regular Cyber Security Awareness Training & Testing. All the technical tricks won’t protect you if you or someone in your network clicks a link and invites a hacker in. Many of the biggest hacks recently work perfectly for the hackers no matter what type of computer or protections you have, just so long as they get the permissions or credentials they need to do their dirty work. The savvier you and your staff and family are about detecting hackers’ attempts and protecting your info, the better. And sadly, to a degree, the more paranoid you are, the better!
There’s always more you can do, of course, but the above are powerful steps that even now in 2021 are not being done consistently. If they were, we’d see fewer successful hacks, and fewer businesses drained of their time, resources and capital paying off the hackers.
